The History of Tom Thumb's Miniatures

Tom Thumb’s Miniatures has been around a lot longer than you think!

It all started circa 2004 when a lady named Erika had a collection of miniatures in a caravan for sale on her property for the dollhouse makers that were looking to purchase them.

In 2005 Sue was making a dollhouse called The Garfield, which she had ordered from the USA and it arrived as a flat pack. Sue soon realised that there weren’t many miniatures available from local businesses and started seeking them for herself, came across Erika’s collection of miniatures, and then after purchasing them off her decided to grow ‘Tom Thumb’s Miniature Emporium’ into a larger business where collectors could come by her garage and purchase the miniatures they needed for their dollhouses.

Sue made sure that she chose only the very best in what was available so collectors could be rest assured that their miniatures were of high quality and would last a lifetime. Sue ran the business from her then home in The Dandenongs, where customers were able to make an appointment to come by and purchase what they were after. When the pandemic hit Tom Thumb’s Miniature Emporium turned into an online only store.

Deb started making miniature rooms as a hobby during the pandemic to pass time after finishing up at her previous job, and after having the suggestion of ‘trying something new’ was given to her, she went on the hunt for a new creative project and came across 1:24 miniature room kits. Deb soon became addicted to creating with miniatures and designing her own rooms and needed a light for her next project, so went online to do a search and came across the Tom Thumb’s Miniatures Emporium website and noticed that it was for sale.

As soon as Deb met Sue and saw all the amazing miniatures in real life, she knew that she wanted Tom Thumb’s Miniature Emporium to be the new venture for her and her family. Deb and Hugh purchased Tom Thumb’s Miniature Emporium and officially took over in February 2022 and run it from their home on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria.

Since then, there has been what we think, are some really positive changes, such as a new logo and branding, a slight change in name to ‘Tom Thumb’s Miniatures’, or TTMs as we like to call it, and a new website to help keep up to date with the ever changing world of online shopping.

Deb and Hugh have also been getting involved in miniature fairs and associations both in Victoria and interstate, introducing Australian miniature artists – which they hope to grow, starting a new blog, social media accounts and having a physical presence at a local indoor market in Rosebud, Victoria called 4 Sisters Indoor Market.

We have so many things to look forward to with Tom Thumb’s Miniatures, we are a year in and are definitely still learning as we go, as well coming up with some new ideas to help spread our love of miniatures and creativity to all the miniacs out there! We hope you are all as excited for TTMs future as we are!
